Perched on the edge of Dove Lake deep within Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park with sweeping views across the iconic waters to Cradle Mountain, the Dove Lake Viewing Shelter takes inspiration from its external environment to tell a uniquely Tasmanian story of what a premium visitor experience can be.
Design Response
The shelter is designed as a series of timber-clad forms that emerge from the landscape, providing protection from the elements while framing views of the surrounding wilderness.
The building's low profile and natural material palette ensure it sits quietly within its extraordinary setting, allowing the landscape to remain the primary experience.
Materiality
Local Tasmanian timbers were selected for their durability and their ability to weather gracefully over time, developing a silver patina that harmonises with the surrounding landscape.
The structure sits on a minimal concrete plinth, reducing ground disturbance and allowing the building to tread lightly on the sensitive alpine environment.
